Rakiura, trip 11, I think

The Northwest Circuit has been my go to tramp for winter expeditions on many occasions. I think I counted up ten prior to this year.

It’s quite different from what many people might imagine.

Not as wet. The showers generally sweep through.

Not as cold. The island is surrounded by water.

The main winter advantages are no avalanches, no dangerous un-bridged rivers, and you walk around a remarkably scenic coastline.

In reality, the main issue is actual daylight length.

The bonus was few others were around, and that proved the case this year when I had nine days without meeting anyone, and 12 of my 14 nights in huts on my lonesome.

Read about this Little Adventure here.
